Wired to Find the Disappointments
Lifting our eyes from what’s missing to what matters most.
Some people only see what’s missing—even when God is clearly present.
You could serve them a feast, and they’ll wonder where the salt is.
Have a meaningful conversation, and they’ll replay the one sentence that felt off.
Watch God move in their life—and they’ll focus on the one prayer that hasn’t been answered yet.
I don’t say this in judgment—honestly, I say it in concern… and hope.
Because I’ve watched how that lens shapes people.
It wears them out.
It skews their relationships.
And it even impacts how they experience God.
Disappointment can become a lens—until we can’t see anything else.
They may not realize it, but disappointment becomes their default.
And when you're constantly measuring what’s not there, you miss the miracle of what is.
Sometimes it stems from wounded expectations. At other times, it’s a way of protecting the heart from future disappointments.
But too often, it’s simply a habit of looking low when we’ve been called to look high.
We’ve been invited to live from a higher place.
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” – Colossians 3:2
“…and raised us up with Him and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” – Ephesians 2:6
We weren’t created to obsess over the gaps.
We were meant to live from heavenly places—
Seeing through the lens of Grace, not lack.
Overflow, not absence.
Promise, not pressure.
Gratitude doesn't deny reality—it realigns it.
When we start from the goodness of God, even the empty places look different.
When our hearts are rooted in heaven’s perspective, joy and contentment begin to grow—even in the unfinished places.
Reflection
Who in my life needs encouragement to see from God’s point of view—and how can I gently help?
In what ways have I allowed others’ negative perspectives to influence my own focus?
What truths from God's Word can I keep before me to stay rooted in heaven’s view?
Prayer for a Higher View
Father, give me grace to see others the way You do. Help me love them patiently while pointing them upward. Teach me to live from the fullness of heaven—not the lack of earth. May my perspective reflect Your goodness, and may my life invite others to look higher. In Jesus’ name, amen.
