How Big?

My Dad’s Bigger Than Your Dad
The Bragging Contest
It started like most playground rivalries do—with a game, a loss, and a boast.
After Eric lost the paper-wad basketball match to Buck, he puffed up and declared,
“Well, my daddy’s bigger than your daddy!”
Buck fired back, “My dad can touch the ceiling.”
Eric grinned. “Mine can touch the roof!”
“Mine can stand on top of the whole building!” Buck shouted.
“Mine can get to the moon!” Eric finished triumphantly.
The debate was escalating into orbit when Miss Marla stepped in.
“Boys,” she said with that knowing smile, “you both have the same Father.”
That stopped us cold.
“The same Father?” Eric asked.
“Yes,” she said. “Each of you has a heavenly Father who made you and loves you. And He’s bigger than anything you could imagine.”
Large and in Charge
Even as kids, we compared strength by association: My dad can beat up your dad.
As adults, the competition changes shape, but not substance.
We compare houses, careers, influence, even spirituality—still trying to prove whose “dad” is bigger.
But God’s question to Job humbles all that noise:
“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?” (Job 38:4)
Perspective changes everything.
He’s not just bigger than our problems—He’s beyond comparison.
And yet, this infinite, all-powerful Creator chooses to call us His children.
Resting in His Greatness
Knowing that God is “large and in charge” doesn’t make us small; it makes us secure.
It frees us from the exhausting need to measure up.
When I remember Who my Father is, I don’t have to prove myself.
I don’t have to be strong enough, smart enough, or spiritual enough.
His strength is made perfect in my weakness.
His goodness covers my inadequacy.
His greatness defines my worth.
The bragging stops when worship begins.
Reflection
Where are you still trying to prove yourself instead of trusting your Father?
How does remembering God’s greatness change the way you face what feels impossible?
What would it look like to rest today—knowing your Abba is already enough?
