The Hidden Message of Hurry
Behind our rushing is a whisper: “Lord, I don’t believe You’ve got this.”
"A lesson I am still learning." Mark
There’s something profound happening when we hurry. Beneath the surface, our souls are saying: “Lord, I don’t really believe You’re in control, so I’ve got to make everything happen myself.”
That’s a heavy load to carry. And ironically, when we live in a hurry, we waste more time than we save. We miss details, forget people’s names, burn out, and—let’s be honest—spill coffee on our shirts.
But beyond the natural inefficiency of hurry, there’s a deeper spiritual issue. Hurry is a symptom of distrust. It places our agenda above God’s and subtly whispers that His timing isn’t enough.
God’s Pace
Scripture never calls us to sprint with Jesus. Instead, we’re invited to walk with Him.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8)
Walking requires presence.
It keeps our heads on a swivel, looking for opportunities to love along the path. Jesus was never in a hurry. Even when crowds pressed Him or disciples tried to rush Him, He stopped for the one—the bleeding woman, the blind beggar, the children tugging at His robe.
The Waste of Hurry
The world tells us hurrying proves productivity. God says hurrying proves distrust.
“Cease striving and know that I am God.” (Psalm 46:10 NASB)
Striving doesn’t save time—it wastes it.
Hurry makes us frantic, blinds us to God’s hand at work, and deafens us to His voice.
But when we quit striving, we discover that stillness isn’t wasted time—it’s redeemed time.
Slow, steady steps with Him are not delays; they are divine appointments.
A Better Way
Our purpose as His children is not to outrun everyone else, but to reveal His love as we walk with Him.
When we slow down, we notice people. We see needs. We create margin to love.
Hurry says, “I don’t trust God with this moment.” Walking says, “I trust God so much that I don’t need to rush through what He has placed in front of me.”
Reflection
Where in your life are you tempted to hurry past God’s timing?
What burden of striving do you need to lay down at His feet?
How might slowing down create space for love and presence in your daily walk?
