The Quicksand Of Trying Harder
When Love Pulls Us From Performance
“Are you so foolish? After beginning by the Spirit, are you now trying to finish by the flesh?” Galatians 3:3
In those old adventure movies, at times folks seemed to end up in quicksand.
One wrong step, and the ground that looked solid began pulling them under.
The frightening part was not only the sinking.
It was the way panic made everything worse.
The harder they fought, the faster they disappeared.
The Trap Beneath Our Feet
The deceiver still works this way.
Fear chases the heart until we step into the trap of trying harder to be loved, to be approved, to prove we are not failing God.
At first, effort feels noble. We tighten our grip, work the plan, promise to do better, and try to climb out by sheer will.
But performance is quicksand.
The harder we try to earn what Abba has freely given, the more exhausted and buried we feel.
The Lie Of Earning Love
Paul asked the Galatians why they would begin in the Spirit and then try to finish in the flesh.
They had received Christ by grace, but fear was tempting them back into earning, measuring, and proving.
That is always the lie beneath performance: love is available, but not yet yours.
Jesus reveals the Father differently.
In Christ, we are not trying to become beloved. We are beloved sons and daughters awakening to what has already been given.
The Hand That Holds
A person sinking in quicksand does not need a lecture on movement.
They need rescue.
Abba does not stand on the shore demanding stronger effort.
His love reaches into the place where striving has worn us out and teaches our hearts to stop fighting for what is already ours.
The rescue begins when we quit trusting our bootstraps and start trusting His hand.
You do not rise from performance by trying harder.
You rise because Love has hold of you.
Reflection
Where have I been trying to earn what Abba has already given?
What fear has been chasing me into performance?
What would it look like to rest in His love today?
Prayer
Abba Father, free me from the trap of trying harder to be loved. Teach me to trust Your hand, rest in Christ within me, and live from the love already mine. Amen.
