This Is The Day

The Verse I Thought I Already Knew

This Is The Day

The Verse I Thought I Already Knew

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” — Psalm 118:24

There are certain verses that become so familiar we stop expecting them to surprise us.

Psalm 118:24 has been one of those verses for me.

I've quoted it for years. I've sung it, taught it, and encouraged others with it. If someone had asked me what it meant, I would have answered without hesitation.

Then recently, I slowed down and read the entire Psalm again.

And it felt a little like discovering a room in a house I've lived in for years but somehow never entered.

Following The Melody

As I read, I noticed a phrase repeating itself again and again:

“His love endures forever.”

It seemed to echo through the entire Psalm like a melody beneath the melody.

Then, tucked into the middle of it all, appears the verse about the stone the builders rejected becoming the cornerstone—a passage Jesus later applies to Himself.

Suddenly, I wasn't simply reading a Psalm.

I was seeing Christ.

More Than A Good Day

For years, I assumed “This is the day the Lord has made” was primarily a reminder to appreciate today.

And it certainly includes that.

But now I wonder if the Psalmist was celebrating something even greater.

The day God's salvation was revealed.

The day the rejected stone became the cornerstone.

The day God's love took on flesh and made its home among us.

And a day that never ends in Him.

The Beauty Hidden In Plain Sight

I wonder if we do this in other areas of life.

We become so familiar with people, places, Scriptures, and even moments of grace that we stop expecting them to surprise us.

We stop looking deeply enough to notice the beauty that has been there all along.

Yet God seems endlessly patient, continually revealing Himself in fresh ways—not because He has changed, but because our eyes are still learning to see.

And perhaps that is what this old verse has become for me.

Not merely an invitation to appreciate the day.

An invitation to see the One who made it.

His love still endures forever.

Christ is still revealing the Father.

And we are still His beloved sons and daughters, learning to recognize His goodness hidden in plain sight.

Reflection

What familiar truth might God be inviting me to see in a fresh way?

Where have I become more familiar with Scripture than with the One it reveals?

What beauty might be hidden in plain sight today?

Prayer

Abba Father, thank You for continually opening my eyes to see more of Jesus. Keep my heart tender and teach me to recognize Your goodness in places I thought I already understood. Amen.
