What Flavor Are Your Tears?
Some tears are bitter, others sweet—but all are invitations for God to draw near.
We all know tears are salty.
But if you paid attention to the moment they fall…
You might notice they’re flavored with something deeper.
Sometimes it’s sadness.
Other times it’s joy.
Sometimes… It’s just exhaustion mixed with mascara.
Tears Speak.
The Bible has a great deal to say about them.
What Do Your Tears Say?
Tears show up at gravesides and weddings.
They fall from prophets, kings, widows, warriors, and even Jesus.
They’re not just emotional leaks. They’re soul signals.
Here are a few biblical “flavors” you might recognize:
Bitter – Peter’s Denial
“When the rooster crowed… he wept bitterly.” (Luke 22:62)
Failure has a flavor. But Peter’s story didn’t end there—and neither does yours.
Sorrow – David’s Downpour
“I flood my bed with weeping.” (Psalm 6:6)
Ever cry so much you need a towel and a Gatorade?
David did. But God met him in it.
Intercession – Jeremiah’s Tears
He cried for a nation that wouldn’t listen. (Jeremiah 9:1)
Ever loved someone who didn’t love God back? Then you know this flavor.
Joy – Joseph and Jacob Reunited
Cue the snot-filled hug. (Genesis 46:29)
Tears of restoration hit different. They wash away years in a moment.
Manipulative – Delilah’s Drama
She weaponized her tears. (Judges 16:15)
Not every tear is pure. Check the source.
Hopeless – Israel’s Cry of Fear
They wept all night… then missed the Promised Land. (Numbers 14:1)
When fear drowns faith, the tears may flow—but not in the right direction.
But Here’s the Hope:
God collects every tear.
“You have collected all my tears in Your bottle.” – Psalm 56:8
He sees. He knows. And He redeems.
Even the bitter ones.
Questions to Reflect On:
What flavor have your tears carried lately?
Are there tears you’ve never invited God into?
Which type of tear is God turning into something new?
A Closing Prayer:
Lord, You see every tear I’ve cried—honest or messy, joyful or bitter. I invite You into them all. Where I’ve wept in hopelessness, speak courage. Where I’ve cried in regret, bring restoration. Make my tears holy, and flavor them with Your grace. Amen.
