Reflecting God’s Love

Reflecting the Light

Every morning at Vacation Bible School, Miss Marla greeted each of us with what I call a “Mary smile and Martha feet.”

She was always moving, serving, cleaning, organizing—but never too busy to stop and look you in the eyes.

She had that rare ability to make every kid think they were her favorite.

Four of us could ask questions at once, and somehow she’d answer all four as if we were the only one in the room.

And she had eyes in the back of her head. If I were pulling Emily’s pigtails or giving Eric a “mule bite,” she’d call my name before either one could squeal.

I never got away with anything.

Secretly, I think I didn’t really want to.

I just wanted her attention—because her correction always came wrapped in love.

That’s when it hit me years later:

She wasn’t the source of the light I saw in her.

She was just reflecting it.

Bringers of Light

Looking back, I can trace my life through the people who carried light to me.

Teachers, coaches, pastors, bosses, friends. None of them was the sun—they were moons, reflecting the Light of the One who never changes.

The moon doesn’t generate its own light. It simply faces the sun.
And when it does, darkness gives way to glow.

That’s what Miss Marla did. She didn’t try to shine brighter; she just stayed turned toward Jesus. And that’s why His light reached even mischievous boys like me.

Maybe that’s what it means to live as a believer—to let His love reflect off our lives so others can see what He’s really like.

A Reflective Heart

Sometimes we stop reflecting because we get covered by the dust of self—self-importance, self-pity, self-protection.

But humility wipes the mirror clean again.

When our hearts turn back toward Him, His light finds us—and flows through us.

We don’t have to strain to shine. We just have to stay facing the Son.

Reflection

Who has been a “moon” in your life—someone whose love reflected God’s light to you?
What keeps you from reflecting His love to others?
How might humility and gratitude help you turn your face back toward His light today?

Prayer

Father of Light, thank You for the people who reflected Your love to me.
Keep my heart turned toward You, that others might see Your goodness through my life. Let Your light shine in me and through me, until all see that You alone are the source. Amen.
