Carrying the Torch Together
The flame we carry is not ours; it’s God’s fire, and it never goes out.
In Psalm 78, we’re reminded of the call to tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord—His power, His wonders, His faithfulness—so that “each generation should set its hope anew on God” (Psalm 78:7).
Too often, we think of our faith journey like a relay race—running our leg and then handing off the baton when we’re done. But God gives us a far richer picture: not batons we release, but torches we carry together.
A baton changes hands once.
A torch spreads its fire to many.
The Flame That Never Goes Out
The fire in this torch isn’t man-made—the Holy Spirit Himself lights it. It’s the same fire that burned in the hearts of the disciples on the road to Emmaus, the same fire that fell on the believers in the upper room, the same fire that has carried the light of Christ through centuries of the Church’s witness.
Unlike a baton that sits idle after the handoff, the torch’s flame is multiplied as it lights other torches—generation after generation.
Journeying Side by Side
This vision calls us to walk together—young and old, side by side, each carrying the light of God’s love into the world. The torch is not passed because our journey is over; it’s shared so the light spreads farther and faster.
Your torch matters. Whether you are in the first steps of faith or decades along the road, the fire you carry is part of God’s plan to illuminate dark places and reveal His truth and grace.
The Long View
Taking the long view means remembering we are part of a story much bigger than our lifetime. The choices we make, the faith we live, and the love we show are all sparks that will outlast us—burning bright in the lives of those we’ve touched.
