Christ Is Your Life
Part 2 — Why We Keep Coming Back To Ourselves
The Quiet Drift From Life To Effort
It Happens So Subtly
It rarely happens all at once.
There’s no clear moment where everything shifts, but slowly, almost without realizing it, something begins to feel heavier. You start measuring again, trying again, managing things that once felt alive and free.
And before long, it becomes about you again.
The Pattern We Fall Into
You begin with something real—something that felt like it was carrying you more than you were carrying it.
And then, over time, you start trying to maintain it, to protect it, to prove it.
Not because you want to leave Him, but because effort feels familiar.
When The Focus Changes
Paul spoke into this tension:
“Did you receive the Spirit by obeying the law of Moses? Of course not! … How foolish can you be? After starting your new lives in the Spirit, why are you now trying to become perfect by your own human effort?” (Galatians 3:2–3, NLT)
The shift is subtle—but it changes everything.
A Simple Picture
It’s like stepping onto a basketball court and forgetting the game. All you can see are the lines—stay inside, don’t mess up—and before long, you’re not playing anymore.
You’re just trying not to fail.
The lines were never the point.
We don’t mean for it to happen, but we slowly trade relationship for responsibility.
Faith becomes something we manage'
Love becomes something we attempt.
And sadly...the weight quietly returns.
The Good News
The same life that began in you has not changed.
And sometimes, noticing where you’ve taken it back is enough to begin releasing it again.
God is not asking for your best—He is offering you His.
Reflection
Where has my life with God begun to feel like effort again?
What am I trying to carry that was never mine?
What would it look like to let Him hold it?
Prayer
Abba Father, thank You that I don’t have to sustain what You began. Help me release what I’ve taken back and return to living from You. Amen.
