Courage Is Not The Absence Of Fear
It Is Learning To Trust Love
“Be strong and courageous… for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” — Joshua 1:9
“Perfect love casts out fear…” — 1 John 4:18
Most of us assume that courageous people are those who no longer feel afraid.
But if there were no fear, courage would never be needed.
Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to keep walking while fear is still whispering.
Joshua stood at the edge of a future larger than himself. There were battles ahead, responsibilities he had never carried before, and countless unknowns waiting in front of him. God never told Joshua he would stop feeling uncertainty.
He told him, “I will be with you.”
That changes the nature of courage completely.
Because courage is not confidence in ourselves.
It is trust in the One walking with us.
What Fear Tries To Steal
Fear narrows our vision. It pulls our attention toward what could go wrong, what could be lost, and what may not unfold the way we hoped.
And if fear becomes loud enough, people begin shrinking back from the very life they were created to live.
But Scripture says, “Perfect love casts out fear.”
Not because life suddenly becomes predictable, but because love reminds us we are not abandoned within it.
The Courage Love Produces
The deepest courage does not come from trying harder.
It comes from trusting more deeply.
Trusting that God is good. Trusting that His presence remains steady. Trusting that even when life unfolds differently than we expected, His love is still carrying us somewhere good.
Romans says that all things work together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
Not all things feel good.
But His love remains faithful within all things.
Walking Forward Anyway
Sometimes courage looks dramatic, but more often it looks like taking the next faithful step while fear is still trying to talk you out of it.
You keep walking, not because you are fearless, but because you are not alone.
The love of the Father is holding you, the grace of Jesus is empowering you, and the fellowship of the Spirit is reminding you who you are.
So move forward.
Not in your own strength.
Not with every outcome figured out.
Move forward because His love is faithful, His grace is present, and His life in you is enough for the step in front of you.
Reflection
Where has fear been shaping my decisions lately?
What would courage look like in my current situation?
How might trusting His love change the way I move forward?
