His Thoughts Are Higher Than Ours

When God Is Better Than We Imagined

His Thoughts Are Higher Than Ours

When God Is Better Than We Imagined

Many of us have read Isaiah 55:8–9 as though God were emphasizing distance.

“My thoughts are not your thoughts…”

And quietly, we assumed He was beyond understanding, beyond closeness, and beyond truly knowing.

But the chapter is overflowing with invitation.

“Come, everyone who thirsts…”

Just before speaking of His higher thoughts and ways, God speaks of mercy and abundant pardon. The passage is not moving us away from Him.

It is drawing us closer to His heart.

The Thoughts We Did Not Expect

The Hebrew word for “thoughts” carries the idea of intentional design, like a craftsman carefully weaving something beautiful together.

God is revealing the intentions of His heart toward us.

We often expect Him to respond the way wounded humanity responds—with distance, disappointment, or keeping score when we fail. But His thoughts move toward restoration, compassion, and bringing people home again.

His thoughts are higher because His love is higher.

The Road Of His Love

The Hebrew word for “ways” refers to the path or road someone walks through life.

God’s ways are not simply different opinions. They reveal a completely different way of relating to people.

Where fear withdraws, He moves near. Where shame hides, He calls us back into the light of love. Where we expect rejection, He prepares a table.

Isaiah is awakening us to the reality that God is far kinder than we imagined.

And slowly, as we begin trusting His heart again, we discover His higher ways are not leading us away from love, but deeper into it.

Reflection Questions

Where have you expected God to respond to you the way wounded people often do?

What changes when you begin to see His higher thoughts as higher love?

How might your relationship with God grow if trust became stronger than fear?

Prayer

Abba Father, thank You that Your thoughts toward us are filled with mercy and love. Teach us to trust Your heart more deeply and to rest in the goodness of Your ways. Amen.
