Lessons From The Vine

The branch simply makes the life of the vine visible.

Lessons From The Vine

What a Good Branch Looks Like
Based on John 15

Jesus said, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5)

What does a good branch look like? We often picture strength, growth, and fruit, but Jesus gives us a deeper picture.

A good branch resembles the vine from which it emerges.

It's indistinguishable in essence and character because its entire identity flows from the vine.

It doesn’t draw life from its own strength—it receives everything from where it’s connected.

A fruitful branch bows low.

It doesn’t stand proud and tall, but heavy with fruit, it humbly bends. There’s a weight that comes with bearing the fruit of love.

That weight isn't a burden—it’s a sign of abundance.

The vine holds onto the branch.

We often think we’re holding onto God, but in truth, He’s holding us. Jesus says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” (John 15:4) Our security isn't in how tightly we cling, but in how faithfully He supports.

A good branch has leaves to catch the rain and sun.

It welcomes nourishment. It receives what the Father gives—His Word, His presence, and even His pruning.

Yes, the branch is tended. It’s pruned. It’s harvested.

Jesus tells us, “Every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful” (John 15:2).

Pruning may feel like loss, but it’s the gardener’s loving hand at work to bring greater growth.

A good branch doesn’t grow its own branches.

It doesn’t build an identity apart from the vine.

Its fruit is not its own achievement—it’s the fruit of the vine.

The branch makes the life of the vine visible.

So if you’re feeling weary trying to prove your worth or produce results in your own strength, remember this: Your only job is to abide. Let His life flow through you. Fruit will come, you don't have to "produce" it, you only "bear it".

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, help me stay connected to You, the true vine. Let me not strive in my own strength, but instead rest in Your life-giving love. Prune what hinders fruit, and love through me to show the world what You’re like. Amen.
