More Than Desperation
Living From The Love That Sustains Us
When We First Turn Toward God
Many of us first turn toward God in a moment of desperation.
A crisis.
A loss.
A season when our strength runs out.
Desperation has a way of waking the heart. It reminds us that we cannot carry life alone. And in those moments, God meets us with mercy.
He rescues.
He restores.
He welcomes us.
But I’ve often noticed something important:
Desperation can be a powerful motivator, but it is a terrible sustainer.
It may bring us to God.
But it cannot carry the relationship forward.
The Son Who Came Home Hungry
Jesus tells the story of a younger son who returned to his father because he was desperate (Luke 15:11–24).
Hunger drove him home.
But when the father saw him, he ran to meet him, embraced him, and brought him back to the table.
The son came because he was starving.
But what he discovered was love.
And it was that love—not desperation—that restored the relationship.
The Life That Sustains Us
Jesus later described this kind of life with a simple word: abide.
“Abide in Me, and I in you… whoever abides in Me bears much fruit.”
— John 15:4–5
To abide means to remain—to live from an ongoing relationship.
Faith was never meant to be a series of emergency prayers.
It is a life shared with God.
Living From His Love
Desperation may bring us to God.
But love keeps us there.
The Father is not only the one who draws us home—He is the one who sustains us once we arrive.
As we learn to live from His love, our relationship with Him moves beyond crisis. We begin to walk with Him in the ordinary moments of life.
And slowly we discover something beautiful:
The One we once sought in desperation becomes the One who quietly sustains us every day.
Reflection
When have I found myself seeking God mainly in moments of desperation?
What might it look like to walk with Him in the ordinary moments of life?
How might abiding in His love reshape my relationship with Him today?
