My Father’s Pocket

When Giving Means Joining Love

Generosity Part IV

Generosity begins in the heart of the Father before it ever reaches our hands. This series is an invitation to notice who Papa is loving, what He is revealing, and how His love wants to become visible through us.

My Father’s Pocket

When Giving Means Joining Love

“Everything comes from You, and we have given You only what comes from Your hand.” — 1 Chronicles 29:14

When I was little, my dad would tell me to reach into his pocket for what I needed to get my mom a birthday gift.

My small hand reached into his pocket, pulled out what he had already provided, and then I carried it into the store to choose something for her.

I remember the joy of giving it.

Only later did I understand where the gift began.

It started in my father’s pocket.

The Gift Before The Giving

David had longed to build the temple for God, but Solomon would carry the work. When Israel brought gold, silver, precious stones, and resources with open hands, David did not see human greatness.

He saw the Source.

“Everything comes from You,” he prayed, “and we have given You only what comes from Your hand.”

The people were not owners impressing God.

They were beloved ones returning what Love had first placed in their hands.

Joining The Father’s Love

Generosity becomes lighter when we see where it begins.

A word of encouragement, a meal, forgiveness, attention, mercy, money, or time becomes holy when it flows from His heart through our hands.

We are not trying to fund the Father’s love.

We are being invited to join it.

Looking back, my dad was not asking me to provide for my mom.

He was inviting me to participate in his love for her.

That is what Papa does with us.

The gift may carry our fingerprints, but the love began in our Father’s heart.

Reflection

Where have I seen generosity as something I must produce?

What has Papa already placed within my reach?

Who might He be inviting me to love with what I have received?

Prayer

Abba Father, open my eyes to what You have already placed in my hands. Let me join the joy of Your love and give from what first came from You. Amen.
