The Way That Welcomes

A Way You Walk, Not a Gate You Pass

The Way That Welcomes

A Way You Walk, Not a Gate You Pass

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” — John 14:6

For many, these words have sounded like a narrowing.
A line drawn.
A test to pass.

But Jesus spoke them to frightened friends, not distant crowds.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled,” He said first.

What follows is not a warning.
It is reassurance.

An Invitation to Walk Together

When Jesus speaks of the way, He chooses a word that means a road.
A path.
Something walked over time.

Not a shortcut.
Not a single moment of arrival.
A life learned step by step.

I think of the difference between being given directions
and being invited to walk with someone who knows the way.

Directions can be correct and still feel lonely.
They assume you’ll manage on your own.

But walking with someone changes everything.
The pace adjusts.

Questions are welcomed.

Detours don’t mean failure.

You learn the way
by being with the one who knows it.

Jesus does not say, figure this out.
He says, come with me.

A Truth That Reveals, Not Accuses

Truth, in Jesus’ language, is not ammunition.
It is light.

It is what becomes visible
when fear loosens its grip
and pretending is no longer necessary.

Truth is not forced on us.
It unfolds as trust grows.

As we remain close,
false stories begin to fall away—
about God,
about ourselves,
about what love requires.

What is taken from us is what was never true to begin with.

A Life That Is Shared

When Jesus speaks of life,
He is not talking about mere survival.

He is pointing to a quality of life
marked by presence, depth, and quiet vitality.

Life that does not run out.
Life that can be known even in ordinary days.

This life is not earned.
It is given.

Not as a reward,
but as a gift meant to be lived.

An Open Invitation

“I am the way, the truth, and the life”
is not a closing of doors.
It is a welcome into relationship.

A way to walk.
A truth that frees.
A life that is shared.

You are not being measured here.
You are being invited.

Reflection
Where have you been given directions when you needed companionship?
What might change if following Jesus felt like walking with Him, not managing alone?
Where do you sense an invitation to slow your pace and stay close?

Prayer
Jesus, walk with me today. Set the pace when I rush, stay near when I hesitate, and teach me the way as we go. Amen.
