Scripture Leads Us To Jesus

“The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” — John 1:14

The Word Is A Person

John begins his Gospel with words that reach back before creation: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

The Greek word translated as Word is logos, carrying the idea of expression, communication, or something made known. John isn't simply giving Jesus another title.

He is revealing Jesus as God expressing Himself to us in a Person.

Then John makes clear who this Word is: “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.”

The Word isn't first a book, a doctrine, or a collection of truths.

The Word is Jesus—the living, breathing revelation of what Abba is like.

God didn't simply give us information about Himself. He gave us Himself.

The Scriptures Point To Him

Jesus once spoke to people who knew Scripture remarkably well: “You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about Me, yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.”

The Greek word Jesus uses for Scripture is graphē—the sacred writings.

Jesus wasn't diminishing Scripture. He was showing us where Scripture has always been pointing.

The Scriptures bear witness.

Jesus is the Life they reveal.

Reading To Know Him

That's how I want to approach my Bible.

I don't simply want to finish another chapter, learn another principle, or accumulate more information about God. I want the Holy Spirit to reveal Jesus through what I'm reading.

I want to see how He loves people, reveals His Father, moves toward the hurting, welcomes the rejected, forgives, restores, and gives Himself away.

Jesus said, “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father.”

Knowing The Word

We treasure Scripture because it continually leads us toward the One who is our Life.

And the Jesus revealed there isn't confined to its pages. He lives within us now. Scripture helps us recognize His voice and know His heart so that His Love becomes increasingly visible through our lives.

The Bible is a precious gift that continually points us toward Jesus.

We don't read merely to know more words. We read to know the Word.

Am I reading Scripture primarily for information or to know Jesus?

What does Jesus reveal to me about the Father's heart?

Where might His Love become visible through my life today?

Prayer

Abba Father, thank You for the Scriptures that continually lead me to Jesus. Holy Spirit, open my eyes to see Him, know Him, and let His Love become visible through my life. Amen.
