Watch For The Empty Plate

Ironically, when we fix our eyes upon Jesus, we see others.

Jesus, knowing their thoughts, called them to his side and said, “Kings and those with great authority in this world rule oppressively over their subjects, like tyrants. But this is not your calling. You will lead by a completely different model. The greatest one among you will live as the one who is called to serve others because the greatest honor and authority is reserved for the one with the heart of a servant. For even the Son of Man did not come expecting to be served but to serve and give his life in exchange for the salvation of many.” Matthew 20:25-28

Watch for the empty plate.

A small Christian mission in China used the dinner table to train missionaries in servanthood. They had a rule that when mission members gathered for the evening meal, no one was allowed to ask to have any food passed to them. Everyone learned to watch for "the empty plate." (Terry Swan)

For most folks, it isn't natural to serve.

Some who serve may find they are doing it for their edification.

That is for their acceptance, affirmation, and approval of others.

Jesus has not told us as His followers not to be great.

Not at all.

As Lord, He has redefined greatness.

Ironically, when we fix our eyes upon Jesus, we see others.

He came to serve, and He sends us to serve.

He reveals Himself in others. (See Matthew Chapter 25)

How might you be awakened to the needs of others so you may serve them?

Lord, may we serve others with Your heart of love. Awaken us to the joy of laying our lives at Your feet so that we may love those we serve directly. Come, Lord, and bless us to bless others. Amen
