The Light For The Step You're Standing In
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” — Psalm 119:105
For much of my life, I have been fascinated by the question:
What's next?
Maybe you have too.
We want to know where the road is leading, how the story will unfold, and what waits around the next bend. We would love for God to hand us a detailed map, complete with turn-by-turn directions and a clear picture of how everything will work out.
Yet that is not the picture the Psalmist gives us.
Recently, while reflecting on this familiar verse, I realized I had been reading it through modern eyes.
I grew up with electricity, flashlights, headlights, and streetlights. The Psalmist had none of those things.
When he spoke of God's Word being a lamp, he was describing a small oil lamp. Just enough light to keep him from stumbling and just enough illumination to take the next step safely.
The Gift Of A Small Light
One thing that would be difficult to do with a small oil lamp is to run.
You walk.
Carefully and attentively.
One step at a time.
The lamp does not reveal the entire journey. It simply provides enough light for the step you are standing in.
And perhaps that is why God so often seems reluctant to hand us the map we keep asking for.
He is inviting us into something deeper than information.
He is inviting us into trust.
The Word Who Walks With Us
What makes this verse even more beautiful is remembering that Jesus is not only revealed through the words of Scripture.
He is the Word.
The light that guides us is not merely information about God.
It is Christ Himself.
The One who knows the path because He is already walking it with us.
What's Next?
I still find myself wondering what comes next.
But I am learning that God usually meets me in this step, not five miles down the road.
And that is enough.
Because the One holding the lamp is the same One holding me.
Reflection
Where have I been demanding a map when God is offering a lamp?
What step might God be inviting me to take today?
How does it change things to know that Jesus walks the path with me?
Prayer
Abba Father, teach me to trust You for the next step. Help me walk with Jesus and rest in the light You are giving today. Amen.
