When Love Leads
Obedience Becomes Natural
"If you love Me, you will keep My commandments." — John 14:15
A Different Beginning
For many years I've heard people talk about the importance of obedience.
I understand why. We all want our lives to reflect Jesus. But somewhere along the way, the conversation often becomes about trying harder, becoming more disciplined, or finding enough determination to do what God asks of us.
Then I read the Gospels again.
What captures my attention isn't how hard Jesus tried to obey His Father.
It's how deeply He loved His Father and how completely He knew His Father's love for Him. Everything He said and everything He did revealed the life they already shared.
Listening Like A Son
That changes the way I hear the New Testament word translated obey.
The Greek word is hypakouō, and at its heart is the idea of listening. Not simply hearing instructions, but listening to the voice of someone you trust so deeply that responding becomes the most natural thing in the world.
A son doesn't spend his life trying to earn a place in the family. He responds because he already knows he belongs there.
That is the life I see in Jesus.
The Life Love Lives
I've noticed that whenever I become anxious, driven, or frustrated with myself, I've usually stopped living from the Father's heart and quietly slipped back into trying to produce something that only love can naturally grow.
The harder I try to manufacture patience, forgiveness, generosity, or even obedience, the more I realize those things were never meant to begin with me.
They begin with Him.
As I continue learning my Father's heart, I find that His life quietly begins expressing itself through mine. What once felt like pressure slowly becomes the natural response of a son who knows he is deeply loved.
The Gospel's Beautiful Order
Religion tells us that obedience brings acceptance.
The gospel tells a far better story.
The Father has already welcomed us in Christ, and His love has become the place from which we now live.
Obedience is no longer something we have to accomplish in order to be loved. It becomes the joyful expression of the life we already share with the One who first loved us.
Reflection
Am I living from the Father's love or from the pressure to prove myself?
Where have I been trying to produce what only His life can grow?
How might the life of Jesus quietly find expression through me today?
Prayer
Abba Father, thank You that I am already loved. Keep teaching me Your heart until the life of Jesus naturally finds expression through mine.
