What Love Sees Differently
“Each one should test their own actions...without comparing themselves to someone else.” Galatians 6:4
The Sideways Glance
It starts subtly...
Someone else gets the opportunity, the recognition, the relationship, the promotion, the attention. Their life seems to be moving in a direction we wanted for ourselves.
And before we know it, we are no longer simply seeing their blessing.
We are measuring ourselves against it.
Envy says, “I want what you have.”
Jealousy says, “What you have threatens what I think I need to be secure.”
Both can make another person’s joy feel like evidence that something is missing in us.
Enough In Christ
Paul says he learned to be content in every circumstance.
The Greek word autarkēs carries the idea of sufficiency.
But Paul is not describing independence or self-sufficiency.
His contentment is rooted in Christ.
That means I do not need your life to become smaller for mine to feel secure.
My life, worth, belonging, and sufficiency are rooted in Christ, so your blessing does not diminish mine.
There is enough.
Different By Design
Paul describes us as one Body with many parts.
An eye is not a disappointed hand. An ear is not an inferior eye.
Difference is not deficiency.
Abba expresses His Life through each of us differently, and what He is doing in you does not threaten what He is doing in me.
Difference is how Love becomes visible in community.
When I know I am beloved, I can celebrate what is beautiful in you without wondering what it says about me.
Your blessing is not evidence of my lack.
It is another glimpse of His goodness among us.
Reflection
Where has comparison been stealing my joy?
Whose blessing has been difficult for me to celebrate?
What would change if I believed there is enough Love, belonging, and purpose for all of us?
Prayer
Abba Father, free me from comparison. Teach me to rest in Christ, celebrate others, and receive with gratitude the unique Life You are expressing through me. Amen.
