You vs. God: Letting Go of Playing God
One of the differences between you and God is that He is not trying to be you.
Have you ever caught yourself trying to be God? I know I have. Controlling outcomes. Expecting others to keep pace. Getting frustrated when things don’t go my way—not realizing that orchestration isn’t my job—it’s His.
There's a saying I keep turning over in my mind:
One of the differences between you and God is that He is not trying to be you.
One of the differences between you and God is that He is not trying to be you.
I couldn’t find an original author, so I think I might have made it up. But I like it. And it’s true.
When We Try to Be God…
We clip our wings with perfectionism, micromanage relationships, and hold unforgiveness like we’re the judge.
We say, “
If I don’t do it, it won’t get done right.” But really, we’re just afraid that trust reveals our vulnerabilities.
Even Moses got snarky, blaming God (“Who am I that I should go…?”), yet God waited. God didn’t ask Moses to be God—just to let Him be God through Moses.
What Scripture Says
Quit striving and know that I am God. —
Psalm 46:10
Silence isn’t walls shutting you in—it’s letting Him speak through your stillness.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. — Proverbs 3:5
Our ideas of success and God’s can look very different. That’s not failure—it’s surrender.
My power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9
If you’re tired of performing—great. That's where His strength begins.
What If…
We stopped auditioning for His approval—and just lived in His affection?
Random ideas to try—just for fun:
When your plan goes sideways, ask, “What would Jesus have done—besides roll His eyes?”
When control beckons, laugh at the absurdity of thinking you're omnipotent.
Begin every day with: Lord, I am Yours, do with me what You will.
