A Better Reason
Growing From Love, Not Guilt
“For Christ’s love compels us...” 2 Corinthians 5:14
The Weight Of “Ought”
We can leave a sermon knowing more about what we ought to do and still feel very little desire to do it.
Dallas Willard often pointed to this problem. Guilt may pressure us for a moment, but it does not produce deep spiritual growth.
It can make us behave. It cannot make us free.
How Grace Teaches
Paul says grace teaches us how to live, and that God is already at work within us, shaping both our desires and our actions. (Philippians 2:13)
That is very different from guilt.
Guilt says, “You ought to be better.”
Grace shows us why Love is better and then supplies the Life to walk in it.
When the Holy Spirit brings something to light, His goal is not to make us feel worse about ourselves. He leads us into metanoia—a change of mind that brings us back into agreement with what is true and into the freedom of living that truth.
Love Becomes The Reason
As we know Jesus more deeply, goodness begins to make sense from the inside.
We become generous because Love has made us generous. We listen because people matter. We share Jesus because we have tasted something beautiful and want others to know Him too.
Growth becomes less about “What am I supposed to do?” and more about “What does Love look like here?”
That is Kingdom growth.
Not behavior pushed from the outside by guilt, but Life growing from the inside through grace.
Love does not merely tell us what to do. Love changes what we want to become.
Reflection
Where has “I ought to” crowded out joy?
What good thing might Love be inviting me into?
What would it look like to let grace shape my desires today?
Prayer
Abba Father, let Your Love shape what I desire and how I live. Teach me to grow from grace, not guilt. Amen.
